Official Texas state inspection station sign at Pit Pros Automotive in Dallas

Looking for a state inspection in Dallas? The rules changed on January 1, 2025. Texas dropped the yearly safety inspection for personal vehicles, but Dallas County is one of 17 counties that still require a yearly emissions test. You need a passing test before you can renew your registration.

Pit Pros Automotive has done state inspection work on Inwood Road since 1986. We run emissions tests every day we’re open. If your car doesn’t pass, we find the cause, fix it here with your approval, and retest, so you only make one trip.

What a Dallas State Inspection Means Now

Most drivers still call it a state inspection. For a personal car or truck registered in Dallas County, it now means an emissions test, not a safety check.

  • Safety inspection: no longer required for personal vehicles as of January 1, 2025.
  • Emissions test: still required every year in Dallas County for gasoline vehicles 2 to 24 years old.
  • Diesel vehicles and motorcycles: exempt from emissions testing.
  • Commercial vehicles: still need a yearly safety inspection. Call us to confirm what your vehicle needs.

Personal vehicle owners now pay a $7.50 inspection program replacement fee with their registration instead of paying for a safety inspection ($16.75 covering two years for a brand-new vehicle).

How Our State Inspection Works

  1. Pull in. Walk-ins are welcome Monday through Saturday, or book a time online.
  2. We test. A technician connects to your vehicle’s onboard computer and runs the emissions test.
  3. You pass. The result is recorded with the state, and you can renew your registration.
  4. Or we fix it. If it fails, we show you why, give you a written estimate, and repair it only with your OK. Then we retest.

Why Cars Fail a State Inspection Emissions Test

Most failures trace back to a problem your car’s computer has already flagged:

  • Check-engine light on
  • A faulty oxygen sensor or catalytic converter
  • A loose or damaged gas cap, or a leak in the fuel vapor system
  • Readiness monitors that haven’t reset after a recent battery change or repair

If your check-engine light is on, have it checked before you test. Our engine diagnostics find the cause so you can pass the first time.

How to Prepare for Your State Inspection

  • Bring proof of current liability insurance.
  • Make sure the check-engine light is off.
  • After a battery replacement or repair, drive normally for a few days before testing so the monitors can reset.
  • Check your registration date so you aren’t testing at the last minute.

State Inspection Questions We Hear Most

How long does the emissions test take?

The test itself takes only a few minutes once your car is connected. Walk-in wait times vary through the day, so book ahead if you’re short on time.

My car is brand new. Does it need a test?

New vehicles are exempt from emissions testing for their first two years. After that, the yearly test applies in Dallas County.

Does a diesel truck need an emissions test?

No. Diesel vehicles and motorcycles are exempt in Texas. A commercial vehicle still needs its yearly safety inspection.

What if my car is registered outside Dallas County?

The rules follow the county where your vehicle is registered. Collin, Denton and Tarrant counties are on the same list of 17 emissions counties, so the yearly test applies there too.
